iOS 6 must have features

I wrote this article some time ago, but I decided it was time to come back to it, as there's still some time before Apple announces the next iOS.


I'll just jump right into the most needed features. As I mentioned before, Apple either implements most of this stuff or iOS will look dated.

Notification Center Widgets*

This is a must have, let developers do stuff for the notifications center, and let the users select what they want to have in there, a quick way to access brightness, favorite apps, and wifi settings (check out the concept video) is very necessary.

Fullscreen Safari*

This has been a feature for the jailbreak community that's been available for quite some time now, include it on iOS for crying out loud, pixels are way too important on the iPhone screen.

I don't care for the menu they use on the Cydia version, but at least you get full screen, until the iPhone doesn't come in 4.0" display, this is neccesary.

Sharing. Make iOS social.**

Share to anywhere, Facebook, Google+, whatever, allow developers to work this out. Twitter is a great start, but people share content in many sites now, and it's what I believe makes the Internet what it is. This could be a widget also, just merge it with everything, specially Safari.

Custom Ringtones and SMS tones*

For crying out loud, let me choose whatever song I want for whoever I want. It's just beyond annoying that 90% of people have the same ringtones, not to mention SMS tones.

Status Bar Icons*

Having a notification screen and a popup are OK, but icons are also needed IMO. There's a chance it will look crowded, but since many just want notifications because of text messages, facebook, twitter and stuff, I think status bar icons would work well.

WebOS made it look great, even with many icons, they just show a "+", so it doesn't look crowded at all.

Other things

• Allow me to take action on notifications from the notifications center, stuff like reply to messages.**
• Contacts Photos*: show pictures on the contacts list, both phone and contacts app. At the very least, show pictures in the favorite contacts tab.
• Add option to kill ALL apps running*.
• Brightness on FastApp switcher*: There's volume there, why can't I have brightness there too? There IS enough room.
• Any orientation homescreen. It's kind of stupid to app switch when in landscape mode on the iPhone.*
• True/Improved Multi Tasking, I hate that when I turn off my screen, usually the app dies with it, let it finish what it's doing. They need to either extend the multi task stuff*
• Bluetooth mouse connectivity: it would be great to use, when in "laptop mode" a mouse, and a keyboard, the bluetooth keyboard functionality is available, but you can only use a mouse if you jailbreak your device (not that there's anything wrong with that), and this really should be a native iOS feature. A Magic Mouse would actually work perfectly with the iPad.*

Ok so that's my thoughts on what the next release should have, I'm positive some will agree with me, and I'm more than certain Apple will keep on "taking" ideas from the jailbreak community, but my point is that they should do it faster, releasing drops of features might not be the best way to go on the mobile market, which has, for many years, moved by trends.

Internet de ABA lento? Es hora de que CANTV responda!

El servicio de ABA de CANTV ha llegado a nuevos niveles de ineficiencia, con la escusa de que "la línea hacer ruído", "el problema se resolverá en 48 horas", de que "tu zona está experimentando problemas actualmente", y que ellos "no se hacen responsables por páginas que no sean del gobierno", cargan mareado al público usuario, cuando la verdadera razón es simple: han saturado sus sistemas y no han invertido en prepararse adecuadamente con una plataforma que cubra las espectativas de los venezolanos.

Qué propongo?
Quitarles la careta, que acepten que el problema son ELLOS y no NOSOTROS. Hasta cuando echarle la culpa a los deḿas? A los usuarios que pagamos por un servicio que cada vez está peor y que no parece que va a mejorar en los próximos meses.

Cómo lo haremos?
El problema es en Internet, así que en Internet tenemos que atacar. Usen todas sus herramientas en las redes sociales, hasta que los principales medios de comunicación hagan que la noticia llegue a todos los venezolanos.

En Twitter usar los tags #CANTV y #ABA y añadir sus respectivos comentarios.

Además de esto, comuníquense al 0800CANTV00 y hagan reclamos, si les preguntan página que están intentando accesar digan cantv.net, si les preguntan cuántas máquinas tienen pegadas a la red, digan una! El problema no está en sus casas o trabajos señores, el problema está en la burocracia y la falta de inversión a causa de un gobierno inepto en todo lo que hace.

iOS 6 must have features

Ok iOS 5 isn't even out yet, but there are already lacking features that are making iOS look dated by now.

When the iPhone came out it was indeed 4 years ahead of any other phones, but that's not the case anymore, with Windows Phone 7 and Android doing great stuff, Apple's iOS is looking like it's lagging. In some things it's still ahead, specially in third party support, but on others, not so much.

Ok so what features are a must for the next big release? Now, keep in mind that this is my personal opinion and I'm pretty sure some of you (I'm looking at you fan boys) won't think this is stuff that's needed until almighty Apple says so.

By the time I'm writing this, iOS 5 beta 3 just came out, and this feature seems to have been included, but since Apple didn't make a huge deal out of this, I won't believe it until I see it on the final release. It's annoying that pretty so many people have Marimba and Tri-Tone as their default tones, and I'm guessing it's because pretty much every other included iOS tone sucks.

I'm telling you Windows Phone Mango and the Galaxy II are the first things that make me think iOS could actually fall unless they keep the magic going, which iOS 5 isn't doing, not with features like "custom ringtones" which any 10-year old phone already has. Either Apple cuts the crap and lets users do whatever they want with their hardware, or they won't dominate the market forever, which I'm pretty sure is what they want.

Convert String to Date in PHP and format it

For this particular case, this is the best solution I've found... I'm getting this from the database on my result set:
2010-08-11 16:00:00.000

First you have to convert it using strtotime(), then using date() you can format it however you want
You can go to the link below for more info on the date function

You end up getting something like this
date('Y-m-d',strtotime($variable))

where $variable looks something like this '0000-00-00 00:00:00'...

It should work for pretty much any string which is formatted that way, so if you have something like 2010-10-10 with no time, it will default it to 12AM, and 1969 if you don't have the date but just the time... Play around with it, it's kinda tricky :)

Result Set to Array

Invalid cursor state, SQL state 24000 in SQLExecDirect

This worked when I was running Windows (WAMP), but when I moved to Ubuntu it started throwing this error:

The problem was that I had an odbc_exec inside another one.

Something like this:

You are just going throw the array instead of the result set... Straight forward, but wanted to share it :)

Carrera por llegar primero

Si pudiéramos acordarnos de nuestra niñez, qué tan atrás quisieras recordar? Primaria? Pre-escolar? Maternal? Primeros pasos?

No sé, pero analizando las cosas un poco definitivamente no quisiera recordar tan atrás como desde que fui un espermatozoide, debe ser sin lugar a dudas la experiencia mas traumática del mundo.

Los acontecimientos deben ser algo así:
Tranquilos durmiendo o quizás en posición de "en sus marcas" si se enteran que el propietario de las bolas está en plena tirazón... ¿cómo saben la diferencia los espermatozoides entre un terremoto y un polvo? No importa, igual... damas y caballeros PARTIDA! arrancan 20 millones de espermatozoides, la carrera por llegar primero, sobrevivir! Peor que abrir puerta en un concierto de Metallica, sacando codos, mas horrible que el traslado de metro en Plaza Venezuela, empujando gente, que digo gente, HERMANOS!, si estás leyendo esto dejaste atrás a dos millones de espermatozoides familiares tuyos! Llegar al óvulo, UN óvulo! Insisto, tal Metallica...

Luego de llegar, ok llegaste, "ya" dirás? no! Tienes que ver cómo los demás mueren a tu alrededor, afuera del óvulo, a la verga!... Definitivamente no es algo que quisiera recordar. Que maltripeo... Será que me estoy acordando y tengo remordimiento? Si yo, que soy bajito fui el más fuerte en ese momento, ¿mis hermanos iban a ser más bajitos que yo? ¿Hice trampa? ¿Fue una apuesta o concurso, y se acordó que yo era el elegido?

Creo que me quedo con la opción del concurso, quién quiere ser millonario versión espermatozoide... No sé creo que ya me fui pa´ lo hondo...

Ser feto debe ser relajante, a menos que te toque una madre de esas que creen que trotando durante el embarazo van a quedar flacas después de aumentar 20 kilos (tengo, a partir de hoy, una creencia firme: los antojos son mojón, lo usan como excusa para comer), señoras lo siento mucho, díganle adiós al blue jean que les quedaba en bachillerato.

Internet Libre - Por qué Internet no debe ser censurado

La decisión que ha tomado Google de abandonar sus operaciones China ha dado bastante de qué hablar (no que ya no fuera suficiente). Me parece una buena jugada de Google, la web no debe por qué tener restricciones, gracias a que se ha mantenido libre y neutral se ha convertido en la herramienta tan útil que es hoy. Poner restricciones limita la innovación.

A pesar que esas restricciones pueden ser saltadas, no es la idea, por qué tener que romper la ley de algo que para comenzar no debería ser prohibido.

El concepto de 'neutralidad de red', implica que no debe haber bloqueos de ningún tipo, una de las razones por lo que esto tiene que ser así, es decir, neutral, es que si no se hace neutral una empresa, o gobierno, o lo que sea, pudiese eliminar a la competencia, y causar monopolio.
Ejemplo: Que Facebook haga tratos proveedores de Internet para bloquear el acceso MySpace, Twitter, y todas las demás redes sociales.
Que Google haga lo mismo contra Bing.
Que mercadolibre lo hubiese hecho con deremate.
Peor aún, que quieras montar tu propia empresa por Internet, y no puedas porque no está permitido o bien porque los proveedores de Internet te piden cancelar una cuota para hacerlo, o recibir permiso de X empresa, individuo, o entidad gubernamental.
Y tantos otros escenarios donde se puede aplicar.

A pesar que son escenarios extremista, todos han sido planteados en diversas discusiones sobre la neutralidad en la red, y lamentablemente las restricciones aplican en algunos países.

La filosofía de software libre, está directamente atada a Internet libre.

Gracias a que Internet es libre, han surgido sitios que ofrecen servicios maravillosos, uno de mis favoritos es Wikipedia, un verdadero sitio social de intercambio de información, donde puedes fácilmente añadir, corregir, y leer información sobre prácticamente cualquier tema que quieras, y si no lo encuentras, lo puedes investigar y compartirlo con todo el mundo! Cualquier persona que tenga acceso a Internet podrá acceder al artículo. Sitios como Wikipedia podrían si la ley de un país está hecha para eso, ser bloqueados por mostrar información no grata para dicho gobierno, sea o no verdad.

Otros servicios como el AppStore de Apple tiene una filosofía terrible, un filtro antes de que los usuarios puedan ver ó usar una aplicación, es monopolio y micromanejo en su máxima expresión, imaginen que cada sitio web que van a ver en Internet tiene que esperar aprobación antes de poder verlo. Eso no es libertad. La excusa de querer proteger a los usuarios personalmente no me convence, sobretodo por haber mantenido Google Voice sin aprobación durante tantos meses. Imponer ese tipo de controles en cualquier espacio de Internet, sea por el motivo que sea, limita la libertad de expresión.

Apoyo el movimiento de software libre, los usuarios tienen que tener acceso a todas las partes del sistema que utilizan, de forma transparente, y por eso hago énfasis en que dicha filosofía está directamente relacionada con la forma como debe mantenerse Internet a nivel mundial.

Por último quiero mencionar que Internet (tal como lo conocemos) se formó por estandares abiertos, desarrollo de protocolos sin regalías y software de colaboración. Internet como una red globalmente compatible y estandarizada se formó por software libre como BIND (DNS), Apache (servidor web) y Sistemas Operativos baratos ó gratis como Linux y FreeBSD. Fué hecho con software libre, para ser libre, no controlada.

Hay mucho más de qué hablar, es un tema complejo, pero en resúmen, todos los bloqueos en Internet son malos, pero no me voy a extender más por ahora.

1. Download and install the Vidalia Bundle. (Installation Bundle for Windows)
2. Go to Start > Vidalia Bundle > Tor > Torrc.
3. Paste the following 2 lines at the bottom of the open document and save it:

6. Run Tor (Start > Vidalia Bundle > Vidalia)
7. Now launch your browser and point it to www.pandora.com and you are able to access Pandora again.

I skipped step 3.2, i.e. I just pasted StrictExitNodes 1... because the second line was giving me issues, but who knows... I hope you don't run into any problems.

Declare variable in MS SQL

¿Por qué Iron Maiden es tan bueno?

No lo sé explicar, es una verga tan arrecha, estoy un mes sin escuchar Maiden y a lo que vuelvo a poner un disco (como ahorita que puse el Piece of Mind), se me paran los pelos cuando escucho a Bruce dando su máximo nivel, a Adrian haciendo magia en la guitarra, a Dave volando en los solos, a Steve violando al bajo como si fuera Charlotte, y a Nicko tirando los palos de la vida... VERGACION DE CACHUO ES MAIDEN.

Y con lo difícil que es cambiarle la hora al VHS

Antes de entrar en materia quería felicitar al pueblo venezolano una vez mas por su tan importante victoria el pasado 2 de Diciembre de 2007. Capaz sean mayoría los chavistas, pero parece que no todos son cegados a lo que diga el "comandante".

Bueno, tenemos hora nueva, media hora que en creo que lo único que va a lograr es sacarle la piedra a unos cuantos a lo que tengan que cambiarle la hora a cuanto aparato tengan, sobretodo si tienen un VHS. Nadie sabe cómo cambiarle la hora a un VHS, y el que lo ha hecho, se le olvidó. ¿Cuántos relojes de DVD y VHS han visto con la hora fija en 12:00 AM y titilando? TODOS, esa es la respuesta. Es otra maravillosa obra de nuestro ilustre gobierno.

En Venezuela pasan tantas cosas que ya los venezolanos no nos asombramos con nada... Le comenté a mi mamá lo de Enrique Mendoza y de panas, la he visto mas impresionada cuando le digo que son las 5 de la mañana y no he dormido. La victoria de "mierda" fue un titular más, OK fué un insulto y super ofensivo y Chávez no sabe administrar su derrota, pero en verdad, después de todo lo que ha dicho en los últimos años, no conozco a nadie que haya dicho "No te creo, ¿Chávez dijo eso!?". La respuesta que yo le doy a Chávez es: Cuando quieras, otra vez, y sin trampa. No te tenemos miedo.

Le voy a robar un chiste a er conde, que lo escuché hoy y dijo que Chávez, si lo analizamos bien, parece un chocho... Labios grandes, pelo maluco, y un poder de convencimieeeento. Y es verdad! Yo de verdad creo que si Chávez dejara de hablar tanta paja y de ser tan grosero, y de insultar tanto, y en vez de eso, se dedicara a hacer que el país funcionara, y no hacer que su imágen como "salvador" crezca, el carajo sería un excelente presidente. Pero verga es muy cagón!!! Yo entiendo que no pueda con la corrupción, es imposible despedir a los corruptos porque a todos les debe un favor, y si los saca a todos, lo matan ó lo tumban, así de fácil. Pero que ataque la inseguridad, por favor, eso no es tan difícil. No veo que hacen nada en esa materia. El ministro es una basura, no porque sea chavista, sino porque NO SIRVE... Osea, no lo botes, es amigo tuyo, pero pon a alguien competente por favor.

¿Es el destino el culpable?

¿Es la dictadura algo que no podemos evitar y que el destino le tiene preparado a Venezuela para que en el futuro salga adelante?

Es una interrogante que me formulé esta mañana cuando me desperté y pensé en el pasado, presente, y futuro del país.

La palabra clave es destino, y lo digo por el hecho de que en Abril del 2002, cuando Carmona se montó en el poder, lo que hizo fue asumir un papel de dictador violando las leyes y haciendo lo que le entró en gana por un día en donde muchos de los venezolanos estabamos FELICES porque por fin habiamos salido de Chávez, pero viendo lo que hizo Carmona, pocos podrian decir que no fueron actos de un dictador.

Ahora Chávez quiere "democraticamente" tomar la presidencia de Venezuela hasta que "el pueblo quiera".

Cualquiera hubiera sido el desenlace de los hechos de abril, lo que el destino parece querer es que en Venezuela se instaure un dictador para que la gente -por la fuerza- tome cultura y aprenda de sus errores.

El que crea en el destino sabrá a lo que me refiero.

Ya creo que es demasiado tarde para salir de Chávez y OJALA me equivoque, pero la energía que rodea al país parece apuntar a la dictadura inevitable por donde se le vea... Es demasiado triste que tengamos que pasar por algo tan horrible para lograr superarnos, pero bueno... Todos los países desarrollados ó en una buena posición (como chile) han pasado por esta etapa, lamentablemente no aprendemos de los errores.

Chávez se está preparando para quedar en el poder por lo que le resta de vida, pero les digo algo, y quiero que lo recuerden los chavistas y opositores: ==TODOS CAEN==

Ustedes mismos los chavistas se van a dar cuenta en un futuro del horrible error que cometieron en el pasado, pero eso es bueno porque no van a dejar que pase otra vez.
Y los opositores, bueno, no nos rindamos nunca, a las calles, a reclamar nuestros derechos.

Lamentablemente no puedo hacer tanto como quisiera, y no estoy por ahora en Venezuela, pero mi corazón y pensamientos nunca salen ni saldrán de allá.

Well, we use this at my workplace and it was impossible for me to track down the company's information, manual for the scanner, etc.

To make this device work just print this out, scan in the order on which they appear and that's it, it's plug and play, you shouldn't need any drivers (I've only tried XP and Vista).
